What a visit to South Luangwa actually costs

Budget one: self-drive camping outside the gate, the cheapest real version

About $580 for two people over three nights, and here is the arithmetic. Be clear about one thing first: the affordable camping is not inside the park. Wildlife Camp, Croc Valley and Track & Trail River Camp all sit on the Luangwa riverbank in the Game Management Area outside Mfuwe gate, because South Luangwa has no public campsites, bandas or rest houses inside the park at all. Camping runs $15 per person per night at Wildlife Camp and Croc Valley, and $15 to $17.50 at Track & Trail depending on season, all from the camps' own 2026 rate cards.

Sleeping outside changes which fee you pay. Each morning you enter as a self-driving day visitor: $30 per person at the self-drive tier, a separate and higher rate than the $25 charged to visitors in an operator vehicle, plus $15 a day for a foreign-registered vehicle under 3 tonnes. A permit day is a calendar day, so you pay once per day you enter, and a rest day by the river costs nothing in park fees. The figures below assume you drive in on all three days.

Food is yours on top, though all three camps have restaurants and Mfuwe village has shops and fuel, so self-catering here is easy by safari standards. One caveat on the fees: the published DNPW schedule was still headed 2025 when we checked in July 2026 and no 2026 tariff has appeared, so confirm the rates at the gate. If your vehicle is on Zambian plates, a Lusaka rental for instance, the vehicle fee drops to about K34, under $2.

Budget two: mid-range at Flatdogs Camp

About $2,770 for two people over three nights. The obvious mid-range pick is Flatdogs Camp, a few minutes from the gate: its safari packages, which include the game drives, run $397 to $498 per person per night on the camp's own rates page, read 12 August 2026, and we price the low end here. Because the camp drives you, park entry drops to the $25 operator-vehicle rate, paid on top of the package, and your own car stays parked, so no daily vehicle fee.

Track & Trail River Camp covers similar ground at $280 to $467 per person per night for its packages. If you would rather unbundle, Flatdogs sells room-only from $52 per person and charges $65 to $80 per activity. In high season, 1 July to 31 October, the same three package nights at the $498 rate come to about $3,370.

The drive from Lusaka is tar the whole way, about 700 km and nine to ten hours; the old warnings about a brutal dirt road to Mfuwe are out of date. If you fly instead, drop the fuel line and add about $1,228 for two Proflight returns at the July 2026 fare.

Budget three: fly in to Kuyenda, the walking-safari top end

About $5,340 for two people over three nights, flights included, and this budget is written for the traveller who flies in. The named camp is Kuyenda Bushcamp, the walking flagship of the valley: five thatched rondavels rebuilt from grass each season, founded by Phil Berry, who learned the trade from Norman Carr himself. The Bushcamp Company's 2026 rate starts at $595 per person per night all inclusive, rising to $816 in peak season.

On top of the bed price come the government charges that camps inside the park pass on: a national park bed-night levy and the Luangwa Community and Conservation Fund, usually bundled as one line of $75 to $110 per person per night. We budget $90, the figure one in-park operator quoted us as their combined charge. You reach Mfuwe on Proflight from Lusaka in an hour and ten minutes, around $307 one way on the airline's July 2026 timetable, and the camp is then a road transfer of about 2 hours 15 minutes from the airport. Whether that transfer is in the rate is not published, so ask when you book.

At peak-season rates the same stay is about $6,660. If Kuyenda's June to November season does not fit your dates, its sister camps Chamilandu and Zungulila start at $731, and Nsefu Camp, Zambia's oldest safari camp, at $735, all with the same levy stack on top.

The calendar-day fee trap

A permit day at South Luangwa is a calendar day running 06:00 to 18:00, not a rolling 24 hours. Sleep inside the park and a single night spans two permit days: enter at 15:00, leave at 09:00 the next morning, and you owe two full days of fees each. Three nights inside can mean four fee days, and that quiet doubling is part of why the levy line at in-park camps sits at $75 to $110 per person per night.

For self-drivers camping outside the gate the same rule mostly works in your favour: you pay once per day you actually enter and never double up. The other half of the trap is the clock. A self-drive permit dies at 18:00 sharp, while licensed operator vehicles may stay out until 20:00, which is why night drives, at $60 to $75 per person through a camp, are the only legal way to be in the park after dark.

The fuel maths, dated

Zambia's Energy Regulation Board held pump prices for September 2026 at K25.29 per litre for petrol and K26.86 for diesel, unchanged from August (checked 12 September 2026). At the September 2026 exchange rate of about K19.3 to the dollar, that is roughly $1.31 and $1.39 per litre.

Our camping budget assumes about 1,600 km of driving: 700 km of tar from Lusaka each way plus around 200 km of park loops over three days. A loaded 4x4 at 12 litres per 100 km burns about 192 litres, which is roughly K5,150, or $265 at the September price. Last reliable fuel on the way in is Petauke, Chipata and the Oasis station on the Mfuwe road; Mfuwe itself has fuel, but carry a reserve anyway, because between January and March the park loops flood and plans change.

Paying at the gate

Cash only at Mfuwe gate, in US dollars or kwacha; cards are not accepted there, though the camps take them happily, so the sensible split is card for beds, bar and activities, cash for the gate. Bring undamaged dollar notes from series 2013 or later, because older or torn notes are refused across Zambia, at the gate and everywhere else.

Fees are set in dollars, and at K19.3 to the dollar (September 2026) it rarely matters much which currency you hand over; kwacha is genuinely accepted, which is not true of every park on this continent. There is no online payment gateway for park fees, so count out the full fee stack in cash for every day you plan to enter before you leave Lusaka or the ATM in Mfuwe.

Where the money surprises people

• Self-driving costs more at the gate, not less: $30 per person per day against $25 in an operator vehicle, plus the $15 vehicle fee on top. The park charges you for bringing your own wheels.
• A permit day is a calendar day, 06:00 to 18:00. One night inside the park spans two fee days, so a stay inside quietly bills more fee days than nights.
• Camps inside the park pass on a bed-night levy and community fund of $75 to $110 per person per night. On a three-night stay for two that is $450 to $660 before you have eaten anything.
• A foreign-registered car pays $15 a day; a Zambian-registered one about K34, under $2. That gap matters if you are driving up from South Africa or Namibia, and it is one argument for renting on Zambian plates in Lusaka.
• Night drives are an operator monopoly by design: self-drive permits end at 18:00, operator vehicles run to 20:00. Seeing leopard after dark costs $60 to $75 per person through a camp, on top of park entry.
• At the budget camps the activities outrun the beds. Two people doing a morning drive and a night drive spend about $240 to $300 a day, several times the $30 camping bill that got them there.
• The $5 park camping fee on the official schedule is a red herring: there is nowhere inside the park for the public to camp. Every campsite sits outside the gate at a private camp charging its own $15 rate.
• One pre-2013 or torn dollar bill can be the difference between driving through the gate at 06:00 and driving back to camp to find better notes.
