South Luangwa in June
June is the door to the prime season: zero rain days on the thirty-year record, the coolest days of the year, and the whole camp network open by the middle of the month. The walking season starts here, in the valley that invented walking.
If you only want the answer
June is prime South Luangwa at a pre-July price. Everything is open or opening, the grass is down far enough to walk, and dawns are cold enough for a fleece and a beanie on the vehicle.
The coolest month, such as it is
The normals give June 2 mm of rain and no rain days at all, with the year's coolest daytime highs at 28.5°C and nights of 16.5°C. Cold here is relative: dawn on an open vehicle bites, and by ten you are in shirtsleeves.
The river is well down, the internal roads have dried out, and the last mud is gone from the loops. This is the first month the whole park is genuinely drivable.
Last arrivals
Nkonzi opens on 1 June and Chamilandu on the 7th, Kuyenda comes online during the month, and Robin Pope's mobile walking safaris begin their season on the Mupamadzi in the far north, running to October.
By mid-June you can stop asking who is open. The question for the rest of the dry season is who has space.
Walking, done properly
Walks leave around six in the morning, run three to four hours in parties of three to six, and always carry a qualified guide and an armed national parks scout. June's low grass and kind temperatures make it the most comfortable walking month of the season.
Book-by note: June sits below the July price step but shares its quality, and the small camps know it. Three to six months of lead time is sensible for the named bush camps; the Mfuwe lodges are easier.
