Safari itineraries, day by day

South Luangwa safari itineraries: 3, 5 and 7 nights, plus the Lower Zambezi, Livingstone and Lake Malawi

South Luangwa is one of the easier remote parks to plan, because a scheduled flight lands at Mfuwe every month of the year and the gate camps are 35 minutes from the runway. What takes planning is the split between the Mfuwe-area camps and the bush camps two to four hours further in, and the fact that walking, the thing this valley invented, only runs from June to October. These plans use the Proflight timetable, the camps' own transfer times and 2026 rates.

Updated 23 October 2026

The short answer

Give South Luangwa at least three nights if you fly in, four to five if you want both a Mfuwe-area camp and a bush camp, and seven if walking is the point of the trip. A three-night stay at a camp near the gate costs roughly $1,270 to $2,580 per person in camp rates and park fees, before the Proflight seat from Lusaka, which runs $373 to $612 return. The classic combination is the Lower Zambezi, linked by a direct daily flight from Mfuwe from June to October; Livingstone for Victoria Falls connects through Lusaka in 3 to 5.5 hours; and Lake Malawi is reached through Lilongwe, by light aircraft or five to six hours on tar.

How many days you need in South Luangwa

Three nights is the working minimum if you fly in. The best-timed Proflight departure from Lusaka lands at Mfuwe at 11:45 and the return leaves at 12:20 or 18:20, so arrival and departure days are half days. Three nights gives you two full days in between: room for two morning activities, two afternoon drives that turn into night drives, and one spare session for a walk or a full-day drive.

Four or five nights is the better first trip, because it lets you split the stay between a camp near Mfuwe gate and a bush camp further in. The two feel like different parks: the gate area has the most game and the most vehicles, the bush camps have walking and almost nobody else. A bush camp 2 to 4 hours from the airport needs at least three nights to justify the transfer.

Seven nights is for walkers. The Bushcamp Company's southern camps are close enough to walk between, and the RPS Mobile Walking Safari is sold only as seven nights. Walking runs June to October, with a minimum age of twelve at almost every camp.

One cost detail shapes the plan: a park day is a calendar day, 06:00 to 18:00, so sleeping outside the park on arrival night and entering at 06:00 gets a full day for the fee. That is covered on our entry fees page.

Getting in: fly, drive or come from Malawi

Almost everyone flies. Proflight Zambia flies Lusaka to Mfuwe in 1 hour 10 minutes all year, with departures at 06:45, 10:35 and 16:35 on varying days: five flights a week in January and February 2027, sixteen a week from June to August. Return fares showed from $373 on Proflight's site on 3 October 2026, and the full fare is about $307 each way. The 16:35 is the flight that long-haul arrivals from Dubai and Addis Ababa can make on the same day, though outside June to October it runs only some days of the week.

Driving from Lusaka is about 700 km and nine to ten hours on tar the whole way. From Lilongwe in Malawi it is five to six hours by road through the Mwami border, or a light-aircraft seat with Nyasa Express. Every camp collects from Mfuwe airport; the times are on our flights page and the road route on our getting there page.

Three nights near Mfuwe gate: the first-safari plan

One camp, no internal transfers, most game per hour. It works all year, including the green season, at camps such as Flatdogs Camp on a safari package or Mfuwe Lodge all-inclusive.

  1. Day 1Proflight from Lusaka at 10:35, landing at 11:45. Road transfer of 35 to 45 minutes to camp, lunch, then an afternoon drive from about 16:00 that stops for a sundowner and comes home as a night drive by 20:00.
  2. Day 2Morning drive or, June to October, a three to four hour walk with a guide and an armed scout from about 06:00. Midday in camp. Afternoon and night drive.
  3. Day 3Morning drive while the cats are still moving, or a full-day drive deeper into the park. In the afternoon, an hour at the Tribal Textiles workshop fits before the evening drive.
  4. Day 4Early drive, breakfast, transfer to Mfuwe for the 12:20 to Lusaka, or keep the morning and take the 18:20, which lands in time for the evening long-haul departures.

Rough cost per person sharing, estimated from 2026 rates: about $1,270 to $1,570 at Flatdogs on a safari package ($397 to $498 a night) plus $25 a day park entry; about $1,920 to $2,580 at Mfuwe Lodge ($565 to $751 a night) plus $75 to $110 a night in levies. Flights are extra.

Three nights self-driving and camping

The cheapest real version of this park, and the only one where you pay well under $1,000. It suits travellers who already have a 4x4 and camping kit, and it works best from May to December, since the park loop roads flood from January to March. Every dollar of it is broken down on our costs page.

  1. Day 1Lusaka to Mfuwe, about 700 km and nine to ten hours on tar. Fuel at Petauke and Chipata; do the big shop in Chipata. Camp by the river at Croc Valley Camp or Wildlife Camp, $15 per person.
  2. Day 2At the gate at 06:00 with cash in US dollars or kwacha. Drive the loops until the midday heat, back to camp, out again until the 18:00 permit cut-off. Book a night drive with the camp, since self-drivers cannot be in the park after dark.
  3. Day 3Second day in the park, or a guided walk with the camp in the dry season.
  4. Day 4Early start for the long drive back to Lusaka.

Rough cost: about $580 for two people in total, or about $290 each, covering self-drive park entry at $30 a day, the $15 daily fee for a foreign-registered vehicle, camping and diesel, on our September 2026 figures. Food and camp activities at $60 to $75 per person each are extra.

Five nights in two areas: gate camp, then bush camp

The plan we would suggest for most first visits between June and October. Two nights near Mfuwe for the density of game and the night drives, three in a bush camp for walking and solitude. The cleanest pairing is with one operator, because the camps hand you on directly: Mfuwe Lodge, then Kuyenda, 75 minutes further south.

  1. Day 1Land at Mfuwe at 11:45, 45 minutes to Mfuwe Lodge. Afternoon and night drive.
  2. Day 2Morning drive, afternoon and night drive. From October to mid-December, the elephants walk through reception for the mangoes.
  3. Day 3Morning activity, then the 75-minute transfer to Kuyenda, run as a game drive. First walk the following dawn.
  4. Days 4 and 5Morning walks of three to four hours, afternoon drives into night drives. At Kuyenda the walking is the reason you came.
  5. Day 6Last walk, transfer back via Mfuwe Lodge to the airport, about 2 hours in all, for the 18:20 to Lusaka.

Rough cost per person sharing, estimated: about $3,290 to $4,500, being two nights at Mfuwe Lodge and three at Kuyenda at 2026 from-rates up to peak rates, plus $75 to $110 a night in levies. Flights extra. Whether Kuyenda's rate already covers the levy is not published, so we have added it.

Five nights on a tighter budget

The same two-area idea at roughly two-thirds of the price: two nights at Flatdogs Camp on its safari package, then three at Island Bush Camp, a walking camp on an island in the Luangwa that is 3 to 3.5 hours from Mfuwe by road. Island Bush Camp opens 25 May to 31 October and takes guests from twelve.

  1. Day 1Fly in, 35 minutes to Flatdogs. Afternoon and night drive.
  2. Day 2Morning drive or walk, afternoon and night drive.
  3. Day 3Morning in the park, then the long road transfer south to Island Bush Camp. Ask whether it uses the seasonal Kafunta Crossing, which saves the drive round by the bridge.
  4. Days 4 and 5Walks from camp every morning, including the seven-kilometre route to sister camp Three Rivers, and drives in the afternoon.
  5. Day 6Transfer back to Mfuwe for the 18:20 flight.

Rough cost per person sharing, estimated: about $2,800 to $3,230, being Flatdogs at $397 to $498 plus $25 a day park entry, and Island Bush Camp at $555 to $630 plus Kafunta's quoted $90 a night in park fees and levies. Flights extra.

Seven nights: the walking week

If walking is why you are coming, there are two ways to spend a week. The first is the RPS Mobile Walking Safari on the Mupamadzi River in the far north, 4 to 5 hours beyond Mfuwe: six guests at most, about ten kilometres on foot a day, a camp that is struck and moved as you go, bucket showers and no electricity, minimum age 21. It is sold as seven nights from $6,578 per person, June to October.

The second is a walking circuit through the Bushcamp Company's southern camps, which are close enough to link on foot in walks of two to four hours.

  1. Night 1Mfuwe Lodge, after the 11:45 arrival.
  2. Nights 2 to 4Kuyenda, 75 minutes south, walking every morning.
  3. Nights 5 to 7Chindeni, four tents with plunge pools on a lagoon, reached on foot if the guides agree the walk that day.
  4. Day 8Transfer of about 2.5 hours back via Mfuwe Lodge, plus 45 minutes to the airport, for the 18:20.

Rough cost per person sharing, estimated: about $5,220 to $7,380 for the circuit, from 2026 from-rates up to peak rates, plus $75 to $110 a night in levies. Kuyenda opens June to 1 November and Chindeni 4 May to 1 November, so plan this for June to October.

South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi: Zambia's two-park circuit

This is the combination that works best, because the two parks do different things. South Luangwa is walking and night drives on land; the Lower Zambezi is canoeing, boat safaris and elephants on the river. From 1 June to 31 October a direct daily flight leaves Mfuwe at 10:45 and lands at Jeki, the strip inside the Lower Zambezi, at 12:15, so you never backtrack through Lusaka. In May and from 1 to 15 November the same trip goes via Lusaka, and after 15 November the Lower Zambezi scheduled service stops for the rains.

Proflight publishes no fare for the Mfuwe to Jeki leg. A valley portal quotes about $824 per person return; get a live quote through your camp. Light aircraft on that leg allow 20 kg per person in soft bags. The full comparison is on South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi, and the Zambezi camps are on visitlowerzambezi.com.

  1. Days 1 to 4Fly Lusaka to Mfuwe, four nights at a South Luangwa camp, for example Nkwali Camp with its private pontoon into the park, from $535.
  2. Day 5Morning activity, transfer to Mfuwe for the 10:45 to the Lower Zambezi, landing at 12:15 at Jeki and 12:40 at Royal.
  3. Days 5 to 8Three nights on the Zambezi, for example Royal Zambezi Lodge beside the Royal airstrip, from $675. Canoe, boat and drive.
  4. Day 8Proflight shuttle back to Lusaka, 35 to 60 minutes.

Rough cost per person sharing, estimated: about $4,590 to $5,890 for camps and park fees, being four nights at Nkwali at $535 to $755, three at Royal Zambezi from $675, and $60 to $120 a night in fees and levies. Flights extra.

South Luangwa and Victoria Falls via Livingstone

There is no direct flight, but Proflight sells Livingstone to Mfuwe as one booking with a change in Lusaka. In October 2026 it runs daily, takes 3 to 5.5 hours and costs $494 one way at the full fare. Proflight serves Livingstone, not Victoria Falls airport on the Zimbabwe side, so if you are coming from Zimbabwe, cross to Livingstone first. Its booking engine takes multi-city trips, so Lusaka, Mfuwe and Livingstone can sit on one reservation.

  1. Days 1 to 4Fly into Lusaka, connect to Mfuwe, and spend four nights in South Luangwa, for example at Flatdogs on a safari package or at Mfuwe Lodge.
  2. Day 5Morning activity, then Mfuwe to Livingstone via Lusaka, arriving in the afternoon or evening depending on the connection.
  3. Days 5 to 7Two nights in Livingstone for the Falls.
  4. Day 7 or 8Fly home from Livingstone or via Lusaka or Johannesburg.

Rough cost per person sharing, estimated: about $1,690 to $2,090 for four nights at Flatdogs on a safari package with park entry, or about $2,560 to $3,440 at Mfuwe Lodge with levies. Livingstone hotels and Falls entry are not included and vary widely.

South Luangwa and Lake Malawi via Lilongwe

Mfuwe is closer to Lilongwe than to Lusaka, which makes Malawi the natural add-on for a beach finish. Nyasa Express flies light aircraft between Lilongwe and Mfuwe, 35 minutes to an hour, at $437 plus $40 airport tax per person with a minimum of two, according to Flatdogs Camp; it publishes no timetable and warns of weather delays from October to April. By road it is five to six hours on tar via the Mwami border, and Mfuwe is a port of entry, so you clear Zambian immigration on arrival by air.

On the Malawi side, Senga Bay is the nearest point on Lake Malawi to Lilongwe, about an hour and a half's drive according to Malawi Tourism. Further south on the Nankumba Peninsula, Robin Pope Safaris' Pumulani Lodge starts at $390 per person per night in its emerald season. Liwonde National Park, about four hours from Lilongwe, is the other Malawi pairing; see liwondenationalpark.com.

  1. Days 1 to 4Four nights in South Luangwa, arriving from Lusaka or from Lilongwe.
  2. Day 5Nyasa Express from Mfuwe to Lilongwe, or a road transfer of five to six hours.
  3. Days 5 to 8Three or four nights on the lake, then fly home from Lilongwe.

A published reference price: Robin Pope Safaris' 12-night Land and Water route, four nights each in the Lower Zambezi, at Nsefu Camp in South Luangwa and at Pumulani, starts at $9,033 per person sharing including domestic flights from Lusaka to Lilongwe, May to mid-November (checked 23 October 2026).

Picking the month for your route

June to October is the window where every route on this page works: the bush camps are open, walking runs, the Mfuwe to Lower Zambezi flight is direct and Proflight has its fullest timetable. September and October are the peak for game, with the river at its lowest, and the hottest, with October averaging 37.8°C. June is cooler and still below the July high-season rates. Book the small bush camps six to twelve months ahead for these months.

From November to April, keep it simple: one of the year-round camps near Mfuwe, such as Mfuwe Lodge, Nkwali Camp or Chinzombo, for three or four nights. Walking stops and the bush camps close, but boat safaris run from January to April and camp rates drop by a third or more. The Lower Zambezi combination is off the table after 15 November. Month-by-month detail is on our best time to visit page and the rains on our green season page.

Putting it together

Each camp on these routes is described, with photos and rate notes, on our lodges page, and the areas and budgets are set out on our where to stay page. For a trip with one camp, booking direct is straightforward. For two parks, a flight link and a border, a safari specialist can hold the camps and line up the flights; send a request through this site and we pass it to one we work with.
