South Luangwa in February
February is the deep end of the emerald season. The river is at its height, the bush could hide an elephant at twenty metres, and the few camps still trading have the valley almost entirely to themselves.
If you only want the answer
February works if you take it on its own terms: boat safaris on a full river, the best birding of the year and the cheapest beds on the calendar, all from a small circle of camps near Mfuwe. It is the quietest month South Luangwa has.
Second-wettest, and greener than January
The thirty-year averages give February 208 mm over 22 rain days, with days of 29.0°C and nights of 21.7°C. That is a step down from January's soaking, but the vegetation is at its maximum because it has three months of water behind it.
Storms still build most afternoons. Mornings are often clear and surprisingly fresh, which is when the activities happen, and the afternoon downpour becomes part of the rhythm rather than a problem.
Fewer doors open than in January
The year-round river camps carry the month: Mfuwe Lodge just inside the gate, with Chinzombo, Nkwali, Wildlife Camp and Croc Valley across the river in the GMA. Flatdogs, Kafunta and Track & Trail, all still trading in early January, are dark by February.
The one counter-move is Robin Pope's Nsefu Camp, which reopens for February and March precisely because of the water: an emerald-season stint in the Nsefu Sector built around the river. If you want the wet season done deliberately rather than as a consolation, that is the booking.
The river is the safari
With the Luangwa this high you can travel it properly, and the $20 boating fee is the best money the park will take off you all year. Expect crocodiles patrolling drowned banks, fish eagles working the margins, and access to lagoons no vehicle ever sees.
Night drives still run from the Mfuwe camps between storms, and leopard do not leave in the rains; they are just harder to pick out of thick cover. Pack quick-dry clothing, and check flight days before you fix dates, because Proflight thins the Mfuwe schedule in the low season.
