The obvious choice for families and for anyone who wants a real bed without a thousand-dollar price tag. Elephants wander through the grounds daily, and you can book anything from a $52 room to a treehouse in a jackalberry.

Ron and Anke Cowan drove to Africa in a Land Rover in 1990 and never went home; they built this lodge in 1998 and still run it. There is a hide under the main deck looking onto a floodlit waterhole, and a geothermal hot tub fed by a natural spring, which nowhere else in the valley has.

Famous for one thing above all: every year elephant families stroll straight through the lobby to eat fallen wild mangoes, an event that happens nowhere else in Africa. Beyond the spectacle it is a comfortable, well-run base close to the gate.

Named for the nickname the valley gave Norman Carr, Kakuli sits on a high bank at a river confluence with a permanent lagoon below. A lion pride works this stretch, and in season a carmine bee-eater colony lights up the opposite bank.

Ask the camp
Derek Shenton is the third generation of his family in this valley, and he builds the hides himself. The Hippo Hide is cut into the riverbank so you sit at water level among hundreds of hippo; the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery have all filmed from it. No other camp in Africa offers this.

Built deliberately on a site poachers once used, Mwamba is four woven reed chalets rebuilt every season. Its Last Waterhole Hide is the only one you can walk to unescorted, and by late season it becomes the last water for miles: guests routinely skip drives and sit there all day.

A locally owned budget lodge in Mfuwe village beside the park entrance, with a self-catering kitchen and an open-air bathroom built around a mahogany tree. Money spent here stays in the valley.
