What the park charges on top
The rate above buys you a bed. South Luangwa National Park charges its own entry fee for every day you are inside. Here is what that adds up to.
- Park entry$25 if you are in an operator vehicle instead of self-driving.
- $30per person, per day
- VehicleUnder 3 tonnes, foreign registered.
- $15per vehicle, per day
Three nights means three days inside, so two adults sharing one vehicle pay $225 in park fees before anyone pays for a bed.
There is no single park fee here. On top of the gate fee, camps pass on vehicle fees, guide fees and bed levies, and what applies depends on whether the camp sits inside the national park or in the Game Management Area alongside it. Kafunta Safaris, who charge one combined figure covering the government levies, told us it comes to $60 per person per night at their two GMA camps and $90 at their camp inside the park. Treat that as the shape of it rather than a universal rate: the amounts move with each operator's lease.

Questions about Puku Ridge
Is Puku Ridge good for families?
Only for older children. Chiawa Safaris sets a minimum age of twelve at Puku Ridge, with walking safaris restricted to fourteen and over, and anyone under eighteen must share a tent with an adult overnight. Tents hold a maximum of two people, so there is no separate family unit.
Can you self-drive to Puku Ridge?
The operator's site does not confirm a self-drive route, and the pages we could reach did not cover transfer details. Puku Ridge is reached via Mfuwe, so ask Chiawa Safaris directly how they arrange the trip from the airport to the camp.
What does it cost to stay at Puku Ridge?
Rates run from about $1,510 to $1,995 per person per night in peak season, among the highest in the valley, plus roughly $120 per person a night in levies and park fees on top. The operator's site did not confirm further inclusions when we checked, so ask for a full breakdown.
Is Puku Ridge good for spotting wild dogs?
It has a real chance. The camp's own pages mention walks with the increasingly rare wild dogs as one of its activities, alongside day and night game drives and a photographic hide at its private waterhole. Sightings still depend on where the pack is denning.
Is Puku Ridge good for a honeymoon?
It suits a couple well on setting: elevated above its own floodplain with a photographic hide below and dining under the stars on offer. Tents hold a maximum of two people each, though the site does not highlight private plunge pools the way some rivals do.
